A new way to pay for your purchases.

When I first moved here from the UK fifteen years ago I really missed the vast choice from the UK shops as well as the catalogue shopping, in particular the NEXT Directory. This was a catalogue where you could choose items of clothing and get them delivered within 48 hours, but the best bit was that you could pay your purchase off in installments. Fifteen years ago that method of payment was unheard of here in New Zealand, but now this is on the horizon.

Lots of shops offer layby, but you can't actually take the garment until you have paid it off. Over the ditch in Australia a concept called Afterpay is now available on lots of Australian brand websites. Afterpay is already operating in store and online in Australia with 500,000 customers using it to make purchases with 3,100 retailers. Although the payments are interest-free, a late fee of A$10 applies if payment is not made by 11pm after the scheduled due date, and a further fee A$7 is added if a payment is not made a week after that.

This Australian buy now, pay later payment system is being taken up by Trade Me. It will be available on their listings from $20 to $800. Afterpay will be free for buyers on Trade Me to use with a credit or debit card, but will come at a percentage fee of the sale for sellers. Hopefully we will see other Australian brands that offer Afterpay in Australia and have a presence in New Zealand, offer it here soon.

One New Zealand brand offering a similar payment system is Glassons. Glassons are offering a buy now pay later system on their website. You can buy online and choose the Layby symbol and have your item delivered and pay it off with 6 weekly automatic payments.

This form of payment is great if you really, really want that leather jacket or special occasion dress, but do be careful to not rack up lots of weekly payments that you really can't afford!
