During her years at the White House a real sense of style evolved. She developed a polished image and won the hearts of the American people by dressing like 'one of the people'. In terms of fashion she became known for wearing sleeveless shifts, 50's style prom dresses and elegant full length gowns. It was the sleeveless dresses that some commentators took offence to, saying a women of a certain age or stature should not wear sleeveless, but she couldn't care less what people had to say, and she made it acceptable for women of a certain age to dress with confidence.
Of course all of this didn't come together without a little help. Michelle Obama had a young Stylist, Merdith Koop, at her disposal who would have advised her on the right outfits, colours and accessories to choose for her athletic figure.
I think together they helped to highlight that women of a 'certain age' and bodyshape can also look stylish and beautiful, and that you can mix high-end fashion with high-street fashion.
