All of the beautiful Summer Dresses are now in store and there is so much to choose from. This can be a daunting process, trying to find a Summer dress that will flatter and fit. If you can afford to, it is worthwhile investing in a couple of dresses that compliment your bodyshape, as dresses are a great Summer throw-on when your having that, "what the hell am I going to wear", day?!

I have hunted around and found three different styles of dresses, for each of the five different bodyshapes. To determine your bodyshape check out my Dress for your Shape page.  Also, with party season approaching, and those of you that might be lucky enough to be invited to more formal parties, check out my Other Tricks page for a dressing guide for Casual/Formal and Cocktail/Black Tie functions.

The Five basic bodyshapes are, Pear, Inverted Triangle, Rectangle, Hourglass and Apple. You may fall into two categories of bodyshape, so consider the tips from both. YOU know which parts of your body you like the best, (we all have at least one!), and which parts you want to keep covered. Remember whatever you wear, you have to be confident in it, as that is all part of looking stylish.

PEAR - You want to minimize your lower half and focus attention upward.
  • DON'T wear dresses that draw attention to hips and thighs.
  • DO try a-line dresses.
  • DO look for boat-neck, high-neck, cowl-neck or detailing on the neckline.
  • DO wear strapless dresses to show off arms and even out proportions.
  • DO opt for pointy-toed shoes to elongate your legs.

INVERTED TRIANGLE - You want to draw attention downwards to the narrower parts of your body, such as your waist and hips.
  • DO wear dresses that call attention to your waistline and distract from your wide shoulder-line.
  • DO experiment with high-waisted styles.
  • DO look for clothes that create the illusion of a waist.
  • DON'T wear spaghetti-straps or boat necklines.
  • DO show off your legs.

RECTANGLE - You want to create curves where they don't necessarily exist.
  • DO wear scoop and sweetheart  necklines to create curves.
  • DO wear dresses with ruffles and details on top to flatter your chest, or necklaces to add detail.
  • DO wear a good bra that will make the most of what you have.
  • DON'T wear overwhelming styles.
  • DO layer to add more dimensions.

  • DON'T hide your curves with shapeless dresses.
  • DO wear fitted dresses.
  • DO try wrap dresses.
  • DO wear a good bra and showcase your bust.
  • DO wear a belt at the waist to enhance your hourglass shape.

  • DO wear belts at the smallest part of your waist.
